Aflatoxin Contamination of Red Chili Pepper from Bolivia and Peru with High Gallbladder Cancer Incidence Rates

چکیده
A high level of consumption of red chili peppers was demonstrated to be an environmental risk factor for gallbladder cancer (GBC) in Chilean women who carry gallstones (GS) in a previous epidemiological study (Serra et al., 2002). However, the pathogenic mechanism by which GBC occurs through red chili pepper consumption in the presence of GS remains unclear. A recent study has shown that the highest incidence rates of GBC are found among populations living in the western parts of the Andes, and in North-American Indians, Mexican Americans and inhabitants of northern India (Wistuba and Gazdar, 2008). In South America, the highest rates were found among women in La Paz, Bolivia, and high incidence rates were found in Trujillo, Peru; Quito, Ecuador; and Cali, Colombia; (Lazcano-Ponce et al., 2001). Bolivia is believed to be the place of origin of chili peppers known as “Andean peppers”. The consumption of red chili peppers is very popular not only among

Ochratoxin Contamination of Red Chili Peppers from Chile, Bolivia and Peru Showing High Incidences of Gallbladder Cancer
Aflatoxins B1 (AFB1), B2 (AFB2), and G1(AFG1) have been detected in red chili peppers from Chile, Bolivia, and Peru, each of which have a high incidence of gallbladder cancer (GBC) as shown in our previous studies (Tsuchiya el al., 2011; Asai et al., 2012). The association between exposure to AFB1 and the development of liver cancer had already been demonstrated by several studies (e.g., WHO 20...
متن کاملMutagenicity and mutagens of the red chili pepper as gallbladder cancer risk factor in Chilean women.
High consumption of red chili pepper has been shown to be a risk factor for gallbladder cancer (GBC) in Chilean women with gallstones, and included mutagens may be important in this context. We aimed to investigate the mutagenicity and mutagens in Chilean red chili pepper in the Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98, TA1537, TA100, and TA1535 with and without metabolic activation ...
متن کاملPrevalence of Aflatoxin Contamination in Herbs and Spices in Different Regions of Iran
Background Mycotoxins are natural toxins, produced by several fungal species and are associated with morbidity or even mortality in animals, plants, and humans. In this study, 120 samples of herbs and spices in both bulk and packaged forms were prepared in order to measure aflatoxin level in different regions of Iran. Methods The aflatoxin was extracted during Mar to May 2015, using 80% metha...
متن کاملNatural Occurrence of Ochratoxin A Contamination in Commercial Spices in Tehran
Background and Objectives: Non-sanitary conditions during the drying, transport and storage stages in the production of spices could introduce mycotoxin contamination. The aim of the current study was to determine the concentration of ochratoxin A (OTA) in 92 commercial spices (including red pepper, black pepper, turmeric and cinnamon) imported to Iran. Materials and Methods: OTA levels were...
متن کاملThe Measurement of Aflatoxin B1 in Chilli and Black Peppers of Qaemshahr, Iran
Background & Aims: Aflatoxins are a group of toxic compounds found in most plant products such as pistachio, corn, spices, wheat, and rice. This study was carried out to detect the presence of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in samples of spices collected from Qaemshahr in Mazandaran province, Iran. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study on the presence of AFB1 in 18 samples of spices including chilli (...
